  • Interview with Anna Sampson – The Chalet & Villa Edit – A Women-Led Travel Business

In its 4th year of operation, The Chalet Edit is going from strength to strength and has been awarded ‘Luxury Travel Agency of the Year 2021/2022’ by the London Prestige Awards and has also been nominated ‘Best Travel Company Ski/Winter Sports Holiday 2021/2022’ by the British Travel Awards.

Being a small business, as well as woman-led, the founder Anna Sampson, could not be prouder of the achievements of the team and company over the last few years, which have been some of the trickiest the travel industry has ever faced.

Reflecting back on how the business began, Anna Sampson, comments “I have been in the travel industry for 18 years, but owning my own travel business has always been a dream of mine. My love for skiing began from a young age, but my aspiration to work within the ski industry was cemented after working as a chalet girl in Val d’Isere in 2004 for the renowned Scott Dunn. For the next 14 years, I continued working for some of the biggest names in the luxury ski holiday industry in London, galvanising and enhancing my knowledge and expertise in providing personalised, one-to-one, holidays for high-profile clients.

In 2018 my vision was to help create truly remarkable tailor-made luxury ski chalet holiday experiences, with my client’s needs in mind. Holidays that replenish and rejuvenate, with undisputed luxury as standard and all of those tricky extras taken care of. That was how The Chalet Edit began.”

She continues “After a few years of building my business on my own, I was ready for 2020 to be my most successful year yet, despite expecting my first baby at the end of January. Whilst I had tried to prepare myself as much as possible for the arrival of a newborn and the impact this would have on The Chalet Edit, nothing could have prepared me for trying to juggle running a business, a newborn baby and a global pandemic. At a time when I wanted to be fully immersed in motherhood, and not miss any moments with my child, I had clients’ holidays being cancelled daily, as well as clients getting stuck abroad when the closure of ski resorts was announced. Add in a constant state of uncertainty and anxiety as to what was happening around the world, and 2020 turned out to be one of my hardest years to date. But this has made the recognition from The British Travel Awards and London Prestige Awards all the more incredible. It is a recognition that I dreamed of when starting the business, and truly reflects the efforts and dedication of our small team over the last few years.”

Like many female entrepreneurs, Anna’s plans didn’t stop with The Chalet Edit. The Villa Edit was launched in 2021 following the success of ‘The Chalet Edit’. Anna found that clients were increasingly asking the team to help with summer villa bookings and the natural progression was to set up a luxury villa holiday website founded on the same customer-focused philosophy. The decision is already paying off, with The Villa Edit being nominated for ‘Best Travel Company for Villa Holidays’ for this year’s British Travel Awards.

Whilst the travel industry is incredibly diverse, the number of woman CEOs within the sector is alarmingly low, which was a huge incentive for Anna when starting her company, and hiring other passionate females within the industry.

She comments “It was surprising to see as I gained more responsibility in each of my previous jobs how the number of women working alongside me dropped. It’s certainly not an issue only the Travel industry faces, and I am proud to be encouraging other women to take on the challenge. It is outdated to be thinking that women can’t do it all, and I am so excited to see The Chalet and Villa Edit already disrupting a very traditional industry”.

  • Ready to Ski the hardest Ski Runs in Europe?

Some of the hardest ski runs are found in Europe and are the ultimate challenge for even the most experienced of skiers.
If you have mastered cruising down a blue run and are a pro at taking on a steep red run, then you’re probably looking for a new challenge – enter the black run or un-pisted itinerary run.
Conditions can make a huge difference, but this aside, these runs carry weighty reputations and should only be attempted by those with the skills to match their confidence.
We have picked 5 of the ultimate ski runs for you in Europe, now all you need to do is tick them off on your next luxury ski chalet holiday. Are you brave enough?
La Chavanette, Avoriaz – Also known as the Swiss Wall, this infamous piste is 1km long with a vertical drop of 331m. This hard ski run starts with 50m of a narrow 40-degree pass, in which you’ll encounter huge moguls due to skiers taking heavy turns. After this tight start, most skiers will escape off to the wider area, but the bravest can continue between two rocky outcrops, 10m apart at their narrowest, usually filled with moguels.
Grand Couloir, Courchevel – The Grand Coulior has become something of a status symbol thanks to the signs saying ‘Vertical Experience’ when you get off from the legendary La Saulire cable car. This iconic black run is 630 meters long, with the maximum gradient reaching up to 80%. Undeniably the hardest part is the path to get to it. You have to follow a narrow ridge carved by other skiers and has big drops on either side into more testing couloirs. The positive is when you reach the run you get views overlooking the village of Courchevel 1850.
La Face, Val d’Isere – A mighty cliff face, Val d’Isere’s La Face black run is one of the most infamous pistes that so many want to tackle. Running for an impressive 3km, with a vertical descent of 959m, this piste was chosen for the flagship Winter Olympics event – the Men’s downhill – in 1992 and has been popular ever since. The best time of day to attempt this run is between 12pm – 2pm when it’s quiet and the ice has melted. Plus you can stop for lunch at La Peau de Vache restaurant, which happens to be halfway down La Face.
Tortin, Verbier – Torin is one of the most dangerous and hardest ski runs in the world. It is 1.3km long and the difficulty rises the more you go down. Tortin has surpassed its ranking as a black run and is marked on the piste map as an itinerary route. This means that is not piste-ed. This in turn means that, depending on conditions, you might have to negotiate moguls as deep as you are tall. But like with will all pistes, its unpleasantness is dependent on weather. When Tortin is so blessed by a full blanket of powder, this run is practically angelic.
Lange Zug, Lech – With an 80% gradient in the upper third, the Langer Zug is one of the steepest ski runs in the world that is groomed. Starting on Ski route no. 215, you will then branch off towards the Schafalp surface lift, which transports skiers to the entry point of the steep gully in the Langer Zug. Running for 4.7km, you will be certain to feel your legs burning by the end of this run.

Think you are up for the challenge of tackling one of these runs? Let us find you the perfect luxury ski chalet for you to soothe your aching muscles in after. Get in touch with our knowledgeable team.

Have you just booked your first luxury chalet rental and are unsure of what to wear when skiing? Whether you’re off to Val d’Isere, Verbier or Morzine, what to wear is as much a part of planning your holiday as choosing a chalet.

Choosing the right ski attire is a very important decision, and having all the right kit for the conditions is key. Here we’ve compiled the perfect list of what clothes you need for skiing and what ski gear you need to get ready to hit the snow.

From safety to style, whether you need outfit inspiration for racing down the slopes or a stylish outfit for apres-ski, this guide is all you need to be perfectly prepared for your luxury ski holiday.

    Your Essential Ski Packing List

Wolly hat – For when you stop for lunch or a glass of rose at apres ski.

Goggles – These are far better for your eyes than sunglasses as they’re great in snowy and windy conditions or foggy light and perfect for when you pick up speed on a red run!

Sunglasses – Perfect for apres-ski and catching some rays during a vin chaud stop or a long lazy lunch.

Helmet – Not the most stylish of items, but oh so essential! You can hire a helmet from any equipment hire shop or bring one with you in your hand luggage. These are required in most resorts now and in Italy children under 14 years of age must wear a helmet. Ski schools and winter travel insurance providers may also require you to have a helmet, so it really is best to have one, just in case.

Thermal base Layers – Thermals have taken a seriously stylish U-turn and are essential when you’re getting ready to hit the slopes. Once hidden under jackets at apres ski, these have now been given a facelift with cool graphic prints and are a must for any fashion-conscious skier.

Mid-layers – Retro jumpers emblazoned with ski motifs and turtle necks have made a comeback but a technical mid-layer fleece is just as useful. Comfort is key!

Ski socks – It’s worth investing in a really good pair of ski socks, you’ll be in your boots all day and socks need to be specially designed to be breathable and withstand the elements.

Scarf of snood – A snood, scarf or even a fur-lined balaclava will help keep you stay safe from the sun and wind. Whatever you choose it’s best to stay safe from the elements than follow the latest slopeside style.

Gloves – Whether you’re into mittens or gloves these need to be waterproof and offer dexterity. Clips and zips are useful for ease of movement and can be clipped together when the lively apres-ski parties kick in.

Suncream – This truly is one of the most essential items to take with you and is expensive to source whilst away. Don’t forget to apply and reapply throughout your ski day.

Lipbalm – Don’t underestimate the power of the sun, even on duller days. Lips can become dry and cracked and a good lip balm like Piz Buin mountain or the Elizabeth Arden eight-hour protective stick with SPF 15 is a must-have.

Backpack or Camel back – Not an essential item but a backpack or camel back is the perfect place to keep your camera or phone safe. Tuck away an extra layer of clothing, sunglasses, wallets and keys. It’s also always a good idea to have water and sugary snacks with you to keep your blood-sugar level up.

Phone safe – The cold can affect your phone, think about keeping it in your pocket near your body heat or buy an extra thick protective cover. A stretch bungee cord is also great for preventing it from tumbling out of your pocket on a chairlift.

Snowboots – Prevent icy accidents with shearling-lined sneakers or keep toes toasty with retro-style moon boots. Your chalet driver may even be happy to deliver your snow boots to apres-ski for you, bliss!

  • Where to Dine on the Slopes in Les Portes du Soleil

Morzine is a classic, traditional French ski village that is linked to the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, a vast region that straddles the French-Swiss border, inter-connecting the skiing above a dozen villages in north countries with 650km of runs. So it’s perfectly possible to ski over to Switzerland for a spot of lunch then back to France for dinner.

We know that mountain lunches play a big part in your luxury ski holiday which is why we have created a list of our favourite mountain restaurants in Les Portes du Soleil.

After a long morning or day of skiing, there is nothing better than sitting down to a well-earned meal, whether that be a traditional French dish or a delicious woodfired pizza.

Le Vaffieu, Morzine – Ideally located in a quiet spot at the top of Pleney and next to the top of the Belvedere Chairlift, Le Vaffieu should be at the top of everyone’s list. They have a wonderful, cosy Savoyard style interior dining area and a large heated covered indoor/outdoor area, plus a sunny terrace. The menu offers a good choice of great freshly prepared dishes and not your usual Savoyard style, using many local ingredients.

Les Chasse Montagne, Les Gets – The restaurant building was originally an old farm, but was renovated and is now a blend of traditional elements with stylish, modern touches, which gives that cosy, rustic feel you expect in the French Alps. The restaurant serves up all the Savoyard favourites including raclette and fondue, as well a variety of delicious artfully prepared meals.

Chez Crepy, Chatel –  This gorgeous and spacious old farm building in Plaine Dranse has been feeding and watering hungry skiers for 30 years and is split into 2 offerings – a quick ‘self-service’ eatery and a more refined and relaxed restaurant, which never fails to impress.  s. In the restaurant, enjoy one of the Savoyard specialities such as Berthoud, Fondue or Croute as well as delicious ‘plat du jour’ specials each day.

Le Wetzet, Les Gets (360 Chemin des Grangettes, +33 6 76 74 35 95) is a small, homely wooden mountain hut where the service is almost invariably good and the traditional French cuisine likewise.

La Païka, Les Gets – Located on the slopes of La Turche slopes in Les Gets is an authentic French restaurant with a terrace drenched in sunshine offering unspoiled views across the valley. Specialities include meat, poultry and fish grilled on the wood-fired barbecue and there’s a sumptuous buffet of homemade desserts.

Les Lhottys Restaurant, Morzine (+33 4 50 34 92 09) (Better known to regulars as ‘Lhotty’s Hut’) is located at the top of the Nauchets chair lift, 1670m up.  It’s a great choice for regional specialities including tartiflette or onion soup and has a good vegetarian range too. There’s a great sheltered terrace if the weather is good.

Chez Nannon, Morzine– run by the Baud family up at Nyon is a small traditional French mountain restaurant that’s almost universally loved by Morzine regulars, primarily as it gets the basics spot-on: good food, good service and fair pricing.

La Terrasse des Lindarets, Avoriaz – At the heart of the traditional goat village, La Terrasse at Lindarets offers delicious Savoyard cuisine. You can’t beat the sunny terrace –  it’s a perfect spot to have a long lunch on a bluebird day.

Pont de Nyon, Les Gets – French cuisine in a large chalet setting, don’t expect quick service this if for long lunches.

We have a whole host of fabulous Luxury Ski Chalets in Morzine & Les Gets on our website, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are waiting with plenty of knowledge and inspiration to help you organise your dream ski holiday.
